Debit Cards

While debit cards are becoming more and more popular, some people are still unfamiliar with them. They may look like credit or ATM cards, but they actually function like cash or personal checks.  Debit cards function in two ways - like an ATM card for withdrawals of cash from an account or like a check to make a purchase.

 Why consider a debit card?

  1. Easy to obtain -- no credit is being requested, and all you need is a WSECU checking account to qualify.
  2. Convenient -- unlike a check, when using a debit card for a purchase, personal identification is not always needed.
  3. Safety -- you don’t need to carry cash or a checkbook.
  4. Readily accepted -- when traveling, debit cards are usually more widely accepted than out-of-town checks, and your WSECU debit card can be used to obtain local currency.

 Managing your debit card transactions

  1. Be aware that when you use your WSECU debit card, the money is immediately deducted from your account.
  2. Record every debit card transaction.  Online Banking is a convenient way to monitor your transactions. You can even establish Account Alerts from within Online Banking to notify you by text or e-mail when a debit transaction has occurred.
  3. Using your debit card for ATM transactions can be costly if you are not using a WSECU ATM. Click here for more information about our WSECU ATM card or to see a list of our ATM Locations.

 Safety & Security Guidelines

  1. Guard your debit card against theft.  Keep it in a safe place just like cash, credit cards or checks.
  2. If you lose your debit card, notify WSECU immediately.  You will be advised if you need to close your account and open a new one.
  3. Choose a PIN that only you know and never carry the number in your purse or wallet with your debit card.
  4. Keep your debit card receipts along with your other financial records.
  5. Review your statements immediately or review transactions online at regular intervals to watch for unknown transactions.
