WSECU increases college scholarships for 2014, now awarding $60K
Deadline for application is Feb.14, 2014
Jan. 22, 2014 (Olympia, WA) - WSECU is currently seeking applications from its credit union members for the cooperative's annual college scholarship program. This year, the credit union has increased the amount of the awards to reflect the rising cost of higher education.
Available exclusively to WSECU members, the scholarships can be used for nearly any accredited college program. WSECU will award 27 college scholarships this year including approximately twenty $2,500 scholarships for students pursuing a four-year or graduate degree and approximately seven $1,500 scholarships for two-year or vocational school students. WSECU reserves the right to adjust the number of awards based on applications in each category. In total, $60,500 will be awarded in 2013. This is a $10,500 increase from 2013.
"Our Board of Directors wanted to adjust the amount of the awards this year, which we hadn't done for a while," said Ann Flannigan, Vice President of Public Relations. "We recognized it was time to make an adjustment after several years of tuition increases at our state colleges and universities."
WSECU's scholarship program is administered by Scholarship America. Easy-to-use online applications are available at: scholarshipamerica.org/wsecu/. The scholarship applications are available now and must be submitted by Feb. 14, 2014.
The credit union's Scholarship Committee, comprised of board members, employees and credit union members will evaluate finalist applicants using criteria to include academic record, financial need and a personal essay. Membership in a credit union other than WSECU does not meet eligibility requirements. Recipients will be announced in late spring.
